Qualities & Traits of a Leader

Not everyone is a born leader and I’m sure we all agree that some people do a great job at being a leader and others can make life hell or can be very uninspiring. There are some characteristics that are vital for leaders to have, such as: • Honesty and integrity • Trust • Excellent communication skills • Confidence • Commitment • The ability to think and plan ahead • Creativity • Positive attitude • Decisiveness • Bring out the best in others A leader must lead by example and must possess most, if not all, of these qualities and characteristics to be considered a [...]

Persistence

My mum always used to say, ‘If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.’ It is one of her mottos that has always been  ngrained in me, and something I think of often. The well-used phrase, ‘Never, never, never, never give up’ is very similar. Persistence is a great word and often the difference between success and failure. Most things in life that you truly want to work on do not easily fall into place, or onto your lap. Most things of great value need to be worked on, strived for, and constantly focused on to get over the line. This is the thrill of the [...]

Purpose

Purpose is as important as passion; to have a reason and an outcome regarding where you want to head and what you want to achieve. To have purpose is to have direction, intention, and a perceived outcome. To have purpose is exciting, a clear way, a real focus, and something to put a spring into your step each and every day. Hopefully the previous topic on ‘passion’ will have helped you to determine the things that make you tick, the things that you are good at, and the things that really resonate with you. When you’re doing what you are passionate about, a lot of the motivation, [...]

Passion

As I talked about in my first book, passion is one of my favourite words and resonates in all of the things that I do. To be passionate about what we do is vital not only to our success but to our wellbeing, our state of mind, our health, and our happiness. To get up each morning with a spring in our step, ready to take on the day, our work, and all it has to offer is a blessing. There is nothing worse than feeling miserable, unhappy with our circumstances, or to have that feeling that we are ‘dragging our feet’ because we don’t enjoy what we do. [...]

Put Yourself In Their Shoes….

The client’s shoes, that is! This is so important—think about how you like to be treated, consider your values and expectations, your wants and needs. Then act accordingly. Treat people as you would like to be treated yourself, with respect, warmth, and understanding, and try to put yourself in their shoes. What answers or solutions would you like to be given if you were them? Always act honestly and with integrity and empathy. It’s important to develop and build a rapport or relationship with the other person. Make them feel comfortable, demonstrate that you can be trusted, and give them the best [...]

Handling Customer Complaints

I’m yet to meet anyone who enjoys handling complaints, but sometimes, unfortunately, they do occur (although hopefully very infrequently). The way you handle any complaint will make all the difference to the outcome. If handled correctly, often complaints can be turned around and the complainants can even then become advocates and end up singing your praises (rather than threatening law suits) and this should be the aim. So how do you handle customer complaints? Time is of the essence and the speed at which you act and resolve issues will often make all the difference. Depending on the nature of the complaint, you may be able to sort it out immediately [...]

Meet People’s Needs & Desires — Ask Questions

Qualifying customers is an important part of doing business but even more important is to make sure that you satisfy their needs, requirements, or desires and the best way to do this is to ask questions. Lots of questions, and more importantly ask ‘open questions’ so that they can discuss and communicate properly with you to advise you exactly what it is they are seeking assistance with. Talk to your clients about what they need and what outcomes they are looking for. Do they need advice? In travel we work on the ‘who, where, what, why’ and this can apply to many services and industries. Ask relevant questions [...]

Thank People for Their Business

If people decide to do business with you, say thank you! With the numerous options available in all retail and service areas, people do have choices, so if they decide to trust you with their sale or business, always show your appreciation by saying thank you. Some businesses show their appreciation (if the transaction is reasonably-sized) by sending flowers or treating clients to a bottle of wine or a box of chocolates, which are lovely, thoughtful ideas. People love to receive gifts and, more importantly, appreciate being acknowledged. Ensure you thank every person who crosses paths with you. It takes no time and minimal effort, but will show [...]

Structure Your Time

I believe that structuring your time is one of the most important skills you can try to master. The day I learnt to break down my time into blocks and manage them accordingly was a godsend! Don’t get me wrong, I am one of the most organised people on the planet. I schedule my meetings and appointments, ensuring that I stagger them so as not to stretch myself too thin, and I am also punctual to the point of frustration to others, but one day I learnt how to make sure I scheduled in other things, not just formal appointments, and this was a ‘light bulb moment’. Scheduling blocks [...]

Time to Set Your Goals for 2018

Goals are of vital importance to all businesses and also to the individuals involved, providing aims, objectives, and dreams to accomplish. Statistics show that most people don’t think about goals or work on accomplishing their goals. Of the small percentage of people that do focus on their goals, an even smaller percentage write them down. It’s proven that hugely successful people usually write down their goals—so why don’t more people do this? Everyone sits and daydreams once in a while (go on, it’s OK to admit it!), so why not turn these daydreams into goals and focus on them? Make [...]
