Choosing a Mentor

Recently, I’ve been asked a number of times if I could be a business mentor to people who are starting out or new to business and looking for business advice. I always feel extremely grateful to be asked and take it as a huge compliment and a testament that people feel I’ve done an ‘ok’ job in my twenty years as a business owner. The businesses are diverse, people are at varying levels in their unique journeys and my priority is usually talk to them about whether or not, I am a good fit for them. To me this is [...]

A Word on Budgeting…

Creating a budget is a great tool to forecast, plan, and manage income and expenditure for a business. The profit and loss report should be your best friend, so that you can see exactly what is happening within your business and understand how monies are being spent and from where income is streaming in. A budget will enable you to forecast and plan ahead so that you can allocate monies to various items or general lodger accounts to ensure you are not over-spending in certain areas. It’s important to be able to sleep at night and not be worried by having no idea as to what is actually happening with your [...]

Systems are Vital

I’m a big believer in ‘systems’ and even though you will initially need to invest a lot of time and effort to put them all together and implement, the reward will pay you back several times over once you have established and put them in place. There are a number of systems to consider and look at putting together when you have a business. Computer software and IT platforms are a ‘must’ for most businesses in today’s world. IT systems will take care of your administration and accounting reporting requirements and will also enable you to keep an eye on all aspects of your business. Systems will allow you to [...]

Back Yourself!

Sometimes you’ve just got to back yourself. When you know you have something of value, something to contribute, and something that can make a big difference to your world then grab the bull by the horns and back yourself. When you have that fire in the belly, feeling butterflies of excitement in your stomach, but feel scared or slightly intimidated, take a deep breath and push forward. We all have ideas but sometimes don’t share them for fear of being ridiculed or being considered wrong. Fear of failure can often paralyse us into submission and silence, too frightened to take a chance. What if it’s wrong? we ask ourselves. Instead, ask [...]

Managing Your Money

The wealth of your business does depend on you keeping on top of your paperwork and administration, as well as controlling your cash flow. You also need to make sure that you are focused on your yield or net profit, taking into consideration all revenue and expenses. There’s no point being in business and putting in all the time and effort if you are losing money or going backwards. Owning a business can mean long hours, huge effort, and a lot of hard work, so you do want to make sure it is worth it. Most people own or purchase a small business to give them flexibility and the opportunity to [...]

Qualities & Traits of a Leader

Not everyone is a born leader and I’m sure we all agree that some people do a great job at being a leader and others can make life hell or can be very uninspiring. There are some characteristics that are vital for leaders to have, such as: • Honesty and integrity • Trust • Excellent communication skills • Confidence • Commitment • The ability to think and plan ahead • Creativity • Positive attitude • Decisiveness • Bring out the best in others A leader must lead by example and must possess most, if not all, of these qualities and characteristics to be considered a [...]

My mum always used to say, ‘If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.’ It is one of her mottos that has always been  ngrained in me, and something I think of often. The well-used phrase, ‘Never, never, never, never give up’ is very similar. Persistence is a great word and often the difference between success and failure. Most things in life that you truly want to work on do not easily fall into place, or onto your lap. Most things of great value need to be worked on, strived for, and constantly focused on to get over the line. This is the thrill of the [...]

Purpose is as important as passion; to have a reason and an outcome regarding where you want to head and what you want to achieve. To have purpose is to have direction, intention, and a perceived outcome. To have purpose is exciting, a clear way, a real focus, and something to put a spring into your step each and every day. Hopefully the previous topic on ‘passion’ will have helped you to determine the things that make you tick, the things that you are good at, and the things that really resonate with you. When you’re doing what you are passionate about, a lot of the motivation, [...]

As I talked about in my first book, passion is one of my favourite words and resonates in all of the things that I do. To be passionate about what we do is vital not only to our success but to our wellbeing, our state of mind, our health, and our happiness. To get up each morning with a spring in our step, ready to take on the day, our work, and all it has to offer is a blessing. There is nothing worse than feeling miserable, unhappy with our circumstances, or to have that feeling that we are ‘dragging our feet’ because we don’t enjoy what we do. [...]

Handling Customer Complaints

I’m yet to meet anyone who enjoys handling complaints, but sometimes, unfortunately, they do occur (although hopefully very infrequently). The way you handle any complaint will make all the difference to the outcome. If handled correctly, often complaints can be turned around and the complainants can even then become advocates and end up singing your praises (rather than threatening law suits) and this should be the aim. So how do you handle customer complaints? Time is of the essence and the speed at which you act and resolve issues will often make all the difference. Depending on the nature of the complaint, you may be able to sort it out immediately [...]
